At Milngavie Orthodontics, we’re often asked about trendy oral care products, and HiSmile Toothpaste is one of the most frequently mentioned. Known for its eye-catching packaging and unique flavours, HiSmile has grown in popularity — especially among teens and social media users. But is it the right choice for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment?

The answer is: No — and here’s why.

---

Fluoride: A Non-Negotiable for Orthodontic Health

Fluoride is an essential ingredient in maintaining strong, cavity-resistant teeth. It works by remineralising enamel, helping to prevent decay and white spot lesions — issues that are particularly common during orthodontic treatment.

HiSmile toothpaste does not contain enough fluoride. While it may seem appealing because of its flavours and “natural” positioning, it does not provide the enamel protection needed for those wearing braces or aligners.

Key takeaway:Always choose a toothpaste with 1,500 ppm fluoride, as recommended by dental professionals and the NHS.

What to Look for in Toothpaste During Orthodontic Treatment

When you’re wearing braces or aligners, your risk of plaque build-up increases, which can lead to tooth decay, gum inflammation, and white spots. To avoid these issues, we recommend a toothpaste that includes:

- Fluoride (1,500 ppm)

Why Gimmicky Toothpastes Fall Short

Toothpastes like HiSmile may seem like a fun alternative — with flavours like watermelon or cotton candy — but they often lack the essential ingredients needed to maintain oral health. Without enough fluoride, using these products regularly can leave enamel vulnerable, particularly in orthodontic patients.

Additionally, some versions focus more on cosmetic benefits (like temporary whitening or purple toners for colour correction) rather than long-term oral health.

Milngavie Orthodontics' Advice

At Milngavie Orthodontics, we prioritise your dental health at every stage of your orthodontic journey. That’s why we don’t recommend using HiSmile toothpaste during treatment. Instead, opt for a clinically proven fluoride toothpaste that supports enamel strength, prevents cavities, and keeps your smile healthy throughout your time in braces or aligners.
